Seeing the Light and Dark in Wood
Reflections in Light and Wood
Sixteen years ago. Where does the time go?
Graves Mountain was once one of my favorite places to wander before it became too well known. Back then, it felt quiet and untouched, a place where I could slow down and simply see. Looking back at this photograph, I realize I wasn't just capturing an old barn. I was capturing something of myself.
I've always been drawn to wood. Its texture, its smell, its imperfections, and the stories hidden within its grain. Wood carries the marks of time. Every crack, knot, and weathered board speaks of seasons endured. In many ways, I see my own life reflected in it.
What draws me most to this image is the contrast between light and darkness. My life has been filled with both. Thankfully, there has been far more light than dark, but neither can be separated from the story God has written.
The dark places were often seasons of fear and uncertainty. Times when I felt alone, overwhelmed, or trapped by circumstances I couldn't control. Looking into the shadows of this barn, I see that familiar feeling. The clutter hidden within the darkness reminds me of those moments when life felt chaotic and heavy, when I couldn't clearly see a way forward.
Yet what captures my attention is not the darkness itself.
It is the light.
Notice how the sunlight reaches the edge of that chaos. It doesn't remove it completely, but it touches it. It reminds me that even when I couldn't see the whole path, God was there. His presence was always reaching into the places where I felt lost, gently assuring me that I would be okay.
The light in this photograph reminds me of my greatest blessings: my family, the people who know me and love me, my relationship with God, and the countless conversations I've shared with Jesus through every season of life.
Faith has taught me that darkness is never the end of the story. As long as I stand firm and keep my eyes on Him, God faithfully leads me through the shadows and back into the light.
Perhaps that is why I took this photograph in the first place.
Something in it recognized something in me.
And sixteen years later, it is still telling its story.
Poem: Where the Light Touches
An old barn stands beneath the sky,
Its weathered boards worn thin by years,
Holding stories in its grain,
Holding laughter, holding tears.
I've always loved the scent of wood,
The knots and cracks that time has made,
For every scar and splintered mark
Reminds me how a life is shaped.
The doorway opens into dark,
Where scattered pieces lie unseen,
A tangled place of shadowed things,
Of what has been and what has been.
I know that darkness all too well,
The fear, the doubt, the crowded mind,
The seasons when the road ahead
Was hidden from my searching eyes.
Yet on the edge, a beam of light
Falls softly where the shadows stay.
Not driving every darkness out,
But showing me a narrow way.
And there I've found the heart of faith:
The Lord was with me all along.
In every valley, every storm,
His presence steady, sure, and strong.
For light has always reached for me,
Through family, friends, and mercy's grace,
Through quiet talks with Jesus held
In sacred, ordinary places.
So when I look upon this barn,
I see much more than wood and stone.
I see a life redeemed by love,
And proof I've never walked alone.
"The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." - John 1:5
A random photograph surfaces in a feed, and at first, it feels like nostalgia. Then, as we sit with it, we realize it isn't just reminding us of where we've been. It's reminding us of who carried us there.
What strikes me about my reflection is that the photograph isn't showing a finished story. The barn is still standing. The wood is weathered but not destroyed. The light hasn't removed every shadow. It's simply present. That's often how God works in our lives. Not always by instantly clearing away the darkness, but by faithfully illuminating the next step.
Sometimes God brings old photographs back into view not so we can long for the past, but so we can see His faithfulness. The places that once held fear, uncertainty, and overwhelm are often the very places where His presence became most real. Looking back allows us to recognize what we could not always see in the moment: He was there all along, lighting the edge of the darkness and leading us forward one step at a time.
"You, Lord, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light." Psalm 18:28
Or perhaps:
"I will lead the blind by ways they have not known... I will turn the darkness into light before them and make the rough places smooth." Isaiah 42:16
What I love most about this morning's reflection is the realization that there is still a journey ahead. Sometimes we think maturity in faith means arriving. Yet the barn reminds us that we're all still being shaped. The wood is still weathering. The light is still moving. The story is still being written.
Sixteen years ago, God knew exactly where He would bring me. He knew about Berry Burrow. He knew about Coffee With Jesus Daily. He knew about the mountain, the cottage, the bakery dreams, the trials, the healing, the conversations with Jesus over morning coffee.
And sixteen years from now, I'll likely look back at today's photographs, today's struggles, today's hopes, and see His fingerprints all over them too.
The older I get, the more I realize that life is not about avoiding the shadows. It is about learning to recognize the Light that has been walking beside me all along. Looking back, I can see where God brought me from. Looking ahead, I can trust Him with where He is taking me next. The story isn't finished yet. The Light is still leading the way. Can I get an Amen!

Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the gift of reflection and for the moments when You gently remind us where we have been and how far You have brought us. So often, we look at old photographs, memories, or places from our past and see only a moment in time. Yet You see the entire story.
Thank You for walking beside me through both the light and the dark seasons of life. Thank You for the joyful moments filled with the love of family, friendship, and Your presence. Thank You also for the difficult seasons, even when I could not understand them at the time, because they taught me to lean on You and trust Your faithfulness.
Lord, when life feels cluttered and overwhelming, help me remember that Your light always reaches into the darkness. When fear tries to convince me that I am alone, remind me that You have never left my side. When the path ahead seems uncertain, give me the courage to take the next step in faith.
Help me to see my life through Your eyes. May I recognize Your fingerprints in every chapter, Your grace in every scar, and Your purpose in every season. Remind me that my story is not finished and that You are still writing it with wisdom, love, and care.
Just as sunlight touched the edges of the shadows in that old photograph, let Your presence illuminate the places in my heart that need hope, peace, and healing today.
Thank You for where You have brought me from. Thank You for where I am today. And thank You for the journey still ahead.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
Closing Thought
